RESULTS - 27 July Squash SMASH Tourney

We have a new 4.0 player: Andrew Mellon!

Andrew M. won last night's Squash SMASH Tourney playing as a 3.5. Here's the full run down:

1. Andrew M. (3.5) - $72
2. Saim K. (4.5) - $33
3. Mario de M. (4.0) - $15

All in all we had 8 players last night, started at 6:45 and ended right around 8:30. Special thanks to our new, first time players: Ramunas J. (2.5), Rehan S. (4.0), Chris M. (3.5), and Saim K. (4.5) - they all said they would be back.

There was nothing easy about last night's tourney with skill levels from 2.5 to 4.5. Andrew M. (3.5) was able to hold on to the winner's bracket through the whole tourney knocking Rehan S. (4.0), Mario de M. (4.0), and Saim K. (4.5) down into the loser's bracket. The loser's bracket was where the real battles happened as all the experienced players pushed through long matches. Only two matches were done in two games (matches are best of 3) and all other matches went the full three games. That's squash for you - sometimes it is not just skill that keeps you in, but fitness too!

The first time Andrew M. (3.5) vs. Saim K. (4.5) meet.

There were some notable battles: Mario de M. (4.0) vs. Jeff D. (3.0) where Jeff was playing the shots but some how Mario was getting to everything. There were unforced errors too - Mario vs. Saim - both players had them... from serves out or failed drop shots on what would should have been winning balls. Eventually, Saim would claim victory over all the other losers and face Andrew again in the finals but would leave money on the table and settle for second place. Andrew played a great final's match and took home the $72 first place prize.

27 July Wednesday's Squash SMASH Tourney

Wow - we went from having a full house of 16 players two weeks ago down to not enough players to field a tournament last week. I blame Pokemon.... I hope everyone that had 'something better to do' caught a rare Pokemon.

27 July is a whole new week!

Just two weeks ago we had a full house tournament last week: 16 players and $240 in prize money. Read the full details in the Results from July 13 Wed. Squash SMASH below.

I highly recommend you sign up online if you think you will make it.

CANCELED - 20 July Squash SMASH Tourney ...bummer

Well... looks like we were rained out, out classed, or something..... Damn you Pokemon GO!

We only had three players sign up for the tournament (Min 6)... so we had to cancel

Thanks to Alejandro C. (3.5), Mario de M., and Ramunas J. (2.5)  for coming out... they were able to battle in pick up games... but no money or prestige was in the game (that I know of).

I will get next week's tourney registration and info up next week asap! ... ok, by Friday.

Have a great weekend and hope to see you next week!

RESULTS 13 July 2016 Squash SMASH Tourney

Full house last night with 16 players!

Michael W. (2.5) pulls out a string of upsets to take first place!
1. Michael W. (2.5) - $144
2. Assam J. (5.0) - $81
3. Morgan P. (3.5) - $15

What a night! Michael W. (2.5) started off with a two wins in the winner's bracket against Andrew M. (4.0) and James W. (3.0) but then was knocked down into the losers bracket when he met Assam J. (5.0). From that point all we heard from Michael was "I just want to go home" but he continued to win through the loser's bracket beating players like Alex W. (3.5) and Morgan P. (3.5) until he was back in the finals for revenge against Assam J. Assam, who cut through to the finals in the winner's bracket may have cooled off a bit waiting for the final match and may have not been 100% ready for Michael who had played back-to-back matches. Michael's revenge against Assam was quick. Assam made some errors early on and with the weight that he had to give to Michael, cost him 1st place and $63. Michael is now a 3.0.

Like I said - there were 16 players - so there were a lot of great matches: Mario de M. (4.0) played nothing but hard, close matches against Assam, Luis P., and Fong Y. Speaking of Fong, this was his first tournament with the added weight of a 4.5. Alex W. (3.5) had a great showing, played a lot of matches, and almost made it into the money. The three new players from last week, Kevin B. (3.0), Kieth B., and Luca B. (3.5), returned this week. Hopefully, everyone had a great time.

For more details on the results, pictures, and even some video of the tourney follow @EvenSquash on twitter for live updates.

I will be posting the signup sheet and information for next week's tourney in a few days.

Squash On.

RESULTS 6 July 2016 Squash SMASH Tourney

It's a sad day when Scott F. not only registers under the name Jack Mehoff (4.0), but also wins the largest tournament 1st prize we've had - $162! It would have been an even better tournament had I not spent so much time asking around who Jack Mehoff was....

No seriously. Wow - I mean WOW! - 15 players! Skill levels 2.5 to 5.5. 1st was $162, 2nd was $93, and 3rd was $15. This was a great turnout and with a lot of new players. We had a bit of a bumpy start around 6:45 and due to some late entries, missteps in calling matches, and court congestion and that pushed us to a finish a later than I'd like, 9:40pm. We'll tighten this up a bit next week. Here are some of the highlights:
1. Scott F. (4.0) - $162
2. Denri G. (4.0) - $93
3. Wayne J. (4.5) - $15

Scott F. (now known as Jack M.) (4.0) was able to stay in the winner's bracket through the whole night beating Rolland D. (3.0), Jeff D. (3.0), Wayne J. (4.5), and Denri (4.0) twice in hard matches. Scott will now play as a 4.5 skill level. Frank G. (2.5) made a strong showing playing through much of the loser's bracket only to shut down just before getting into the money rounds by Denri (4.0). Speaking of Denri (4.0). NASCAR Denri was in true form; he out lasted his opponents by running every ball down and often surprising us with great shots and spectacular crashes into the floor, walls, and glass.

Upsets? Yes... we had upsets: Anjo G. (5.0) had Alex W. (3.5) in an almost shut out games but.. but... Alex took victory out of Anjo's grasp and sat him down for the night. Charlie J. (5.5), highest rated player in the tourney, got put down by Frank G., our strongest 2.5 in the tourney. Some of our favorites like Courtney W. (3.5) and Jeff D. (3.0), previous winners, were eliminated in the early rounds.

Special thanks to our new players, Luca B. (3.5), Kevin B. (3.0), and Keith B. (2.5) who courageously jumped in the tournament at the last minute. We hope to see them again. Also thanks to Andre Maur for freeing up Court 1 for us to help things move along a bit faster.

I'll post the announcement for next week's tournament in a few days. Hope to see you there!

6 July 2016 Weekly Wednesday Squash SMASH Tourney - 6:30

Happy 4th of July!

If you were playing with fireworks over the holiday (or any time really...), I hope you still have enough fingers to hold your squash racket. Seriously though, I hope everyone had a great 4th.

Think you'll make it this week? If so, sign up here:

Sooo... a lot of people have the week off - That could mean a great turn out for this week's (July  6) Wednesday Squash SMASH Tourney. If we get more than 12 people, I will add in the earlier donated winnings to the prize pool....  that would mean 1st place will be at least $135!

Also - I cranked up some social media this weekend and started a @EvenSquash Twitter account, EvenSquash Facebook account, and website (www.EvenSquash.com). Follow those for the latest and what not.

Hope to see you there!

29 June 2016 - Weekly Wednesday Squash SMASH Tournament

Great tourney last night! 11 players with skills from 2.5 to 5.5!

1. Charlie J. (5.5) - $99
2. Denri G. (4.0) - $51
3. Andrew W. (3.5) - $15

Again, all but 5 matches battled to 3 games (matches are best of 3 games) and that coupled with some court congestion early on made the tournament end shortly after 9pm. Hard night's work.

It was exciting. Charlie (5.5), the tourney heavy, was set to cut through the winner's bracket until he met Denri (4.0). Denri put Charlie into the loser's making Charlie fight to get back to finish. Andrew (3.5) was playing really well, so well he decided to move himself up to play as a 4.0 mid-tournament and even with the extra weight, he still knocked Anjo (5.0) out. Though some would argue that the courageous move to play his final matches as a 4.0 made things fairer, it is probably what gave him 3rd instead of a possible win. Just sayin...

There were a lot of close matches which made for great spectating - even those that got knocked out early stuck around to watch the matches. We had Alejandro C. (3.5), play some hard matches with none of his opponents giving up easily. Jeff D. (3.0) played some 'out-of-his-mind' squash to knock out Alex W. (3.5). Paul M. (2.5) defeated Bob W. (3.0). Scott F. (4.0) gave Charlie (5.5) a scare and almost had him early on. Exciting!

I'll send out the notice in the next few days for next week's tournament.

See ya.
