Wed 5 Oct Squash SMASH Tourney - CANCELED - ....but....

Don't fret - Wednesday Oct 12 Weekly Tourney is still on.

We also have our Team Event coming up on Saturday Oct 15.

The Quick and The Dirty
2:00 - 3:00pm Saturday, Oct 15

free, fast, and fun team event that requires a bit of strategy, teamwork, and pressure for the individual and the team. In a nutshell - 2 teams of 5 players each is needed for about an hour: Anjo G. (5.0) and Jeff D. (3.0) have volunteered to be team captains. This is a test concept of something bigger; think team even but with a twist; think multiple teams from many squash clubs. So if you don't find yourself on a team but wanted to play - don't sweat it. If you want to play, sign up here. Or contact Anjo, Jeff, or myself.

Winners - Box of balls.
Losers - Can of Foster's that sat in the sun during the event.

There is no entry fee: just a chance to win... or lose.

One winner

Adam S. (4.0), playing in his first Weekly Wednesday Squash SMASH Tourney, snapped it off and went home with first place prize of $54 cash and a $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift card. Let's just say everyone got more than their filling of 5.0 action. If you see Adam, congratulations are due.

1. Adam S. (4.0) - $54 + $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card
2. Assam J. (5.0) - $21
3. Saim K. (5.0) - $15

The Quick and The Dirty

So if you don't find yourself on a team but wanted to play - don't sweat it. If you want to play, sign up here. Or contact Anjo, Jeff, or myself.

Winners - Box of balls.

Rules
  • 5 players. Team is Captain + 4 others. Anyone can play, including the captain.
  • All skill levels welcome. Games are played using the EvenSquash handicap system.
  • One Court. Only one court is used during this event.
  • Racket spin. Team captain winning the spin can decide to post a player first or receive.
  • Player's Coach. Player selects before the start who they want to coach them during the match.
  • Time-outs. Players have two 60 sec time-outs that can be called by either the player or their coach at anytime between points.
  • Best of 5. Matches are played best of 5 games.
  • Alternate post and receive. After the first match, teams alternate posting the next player for the next match.
  • 3 matches. This means that two players will not play in the event.

RESULTS - 21 Sep Squash SMASH Tourney - CANCELED

Well.... bummer....
We only had 5 players come out to play....
Tourney was canceled....

But that's ok. It's only the second time we've had to cancel. Understandably, there's lots of stuff going on with everyone and that's the whole purpose of the weekly tournament - come out when you can - no commitments.

Special thanks Ben Q. (5.0) who came back as a guest (no longer a member of the club) just to play in our tourney - hopefully he'll be back soon and someone will give him a challenge. Also thanks to Saim K (5.0), Fletcher C. (5.0), Paul M. (2.5), and Jeff D. (3.0) for coming out and wanting to play. We all mixed it up afterwards so everyone still got some squash in.

Also - Keep your ears to the ground about an upcoming Team Event 2pm Sat Oct 15. Ask Jeff D. and Anjo G., the two volunteer team captains, about getting on one of their teams.

I'll have next week's tourney announcement up in a day or two. Until then, you can always follow along with live updates and latest info on Twitter @EvenSquash, Facebook @EvenSquash, Instagram @EvenSquash. RESULTS - 14 Sep Squash SMASH Tourney

So that's how it's going to be...
Jim C. takes it all
The pot
It was a good night - neigh - a great night! Jim C. (3.0) started the night off with a Bye in the first round and for the right player that can be a huge advantage, add in a bit of luck, and you can be on the path to victory, a.k.a. Jim's path. Jim faced solid players with significant tournament experience like Jeff D. (3.0), Fletch C. (5.0), and road-player in from Houston, Chris E. (3.5). But Jim C. (playing as a 3.0) prevailed. Jim will now play as a 3.5. If you see Jim, congratulate him.

Here's how it all went down....

We had 10 players in last night's Weekly Wednesday Squash SMASH Tourney, 6:45 - 8:35. This tourney is not easy and you need to bring your squash skills, your fitness, and your head game. To put that in perspective, some, like Roger W. (3.5) made it all the way to the semi's but had to drop out due to shoulder injury. Roger might say the tourney would be more appropriately named the 'Squash GRINDER'.
1. Jim C. (3.0) - $90 + $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card
2. Fletcher C. (5.0) - $45
3. Roger W. (3.5) - $15
and Luis P. (3.0) won the $50 Sushi Nami Gift Card in a random player draw - luhkeee!

We had a lot of good matches last night. Luis P. (3.0) took his matches to the full three games with the last match against Mario De M. (4.5) having each game come down to just one point. For those not familiar with an EvenSquash handicapped tourney, that meant that Luis had to get 5 points per game and Mario needed 15, best of three games. So for the Luis P. vs Mario de M. match it was a 5 to 15 race and game scores were 5-14, 15-4, and 15-4. Tight!

We also had a fellow squash player in from Houston last night, Chris E., playing as a 3.5. A new player, especially a road-player, always brings the excitement because everyone talks about the 'new guy'. Chris E. did well, got a taste of some heavy skills when he played his first 5.0 in tournament format, and was able to press his own weight in against lower players like Jim C. (3.0). Hadi (3.0) made his SMASH debut - welcome and hope he returns. Cody H. (2.5) coming back for more in his second tourney, played Jeff D. (3.0) to the end and in hill-hill matches with each game coming down to a single point. Tight x2!
The complete bracket
Everyone had a lot a fun. Special thanks to our sponsors, Marlow's Tavern and Sushi Nami. We also appreciate the crowd of spectators that watched the finals and added to the excitement. And special thanks to Wayne J. (4.5) who entered but forfeited out before the first match but still donated his entry fee to the tourney.

Below are some more highlights, video, and pics. Thanks again to everyone coming out to play!

(2.5), first time player, was the lucky one who drew the $50 Gift Card from Sushi Nami. Check out: RESULTS - 7 Sep Squash SMASH Tourney

RESULTS - 7 Sep Squash SMASH Tourney

Great turnout - 11 Players!
The
Denri, Get Well Soon
Squash Tourney

The finishers:
1. Saim K. (5.0) - $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card + $99
2. Yoann B. (3.0) - $51
3. Roland D. (3.0) - $15

A bunch of things happened last night.

First there was Saim K. (5.0). When Siam steps on to the court it is like a superhero landing in the middle of a battle {FX cue: crunching thud then dust settling}. Last night Siam walked away with $99 cash and a $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card. It wasn't easy for him though. After playing a hard first match against Fletch C. (5.0), Saim got knocked into the loser's bracket in the second round by Tim J. (2.5). He had to claw back through almost the entire loser's bracket and had it not been for a couple players who had to drop out due to injury, the outcome could have been very different. In the end, Saim faced Yoann B. (3.0). Yoann, who is known for speed and never letting a ball bounce twice, was able to keep some pressure on Saim but eventually ran out of gas in the final match. Normally a win like this would mean promotion, but Saim K. had just been moved up to a 5.0 and until there is more data on him playing as a 5.0, he will remain a 5.0 in the next tourney. Well played everyone!
Siam K. (5.0) giving Yoann B. (3.0) some "tips"
Second there were all the other matches. We had a great variety of skill levels that made for some interesting matches and some crazy upsets. There was Tim J. (2.5), fresh off a new baby (congratulations new Dad), went up against seasoned Mario De M. (4.5) and came away clean, and then pushed Saim into the loser's bracket the very next match. I thought for sure Tim was going to be in the money but Tim had to drop out due to injury (new babies are hard on the body). Welcome first time players; Amanda W. (2.5) and Waley I. (2.5) made their SMASH tourney debuts. Waley I. got cut in the first round but Amanda W. was able to make it a few matches into the tourney. Then there was George B. (3.5), who has a smooth-as-silk drop shot, put a hurting on Mario De M. (4.5) and Fletch C. (5.0), only to have to end it early against Saim K. with an injured elbow.

Third. It was for Denri. Thank you everyone who chipped in to get Denri a get well gift. I will get a card and leave it at the front desk for everyone to sign through the weekend and pass the contributions on to Anjo.

And lastly,  Amanda W. (2.5) was the lucky player to win the drawing for the $50 Sushi Nami Gift Card.

Hope everyone had fun!

Below are some more highlights, video, and pics. Thanks again to everyone coming out to play!

01 September, 2016

RESULTS - 31 Aug Squash SMASH Tourney

What do six squash players with
skills from 2.5 to 5.0 have in common?
They all got beat by Saim K.

We had a small turn out this week with two 2.5 level players, a 3.0, a 3.5, and two 5.0's and that made for some interesting matches and a lot of fun. Please congratulate Saim on his win and normally I would be announcing his promotion to the next skill level. But because of the small field, Saim will remain a 5.0. We need more than 8 players before making handicap adjustments.

1. Saim K. (5.0) - $54 + $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card
2. Anjo G. (5.0) - $21
3. Jim C. (3.0) - $15

Not saying Saim K (5.0) had it easy... but he did start off with a bye in the first round and that gave him a bit more wind than some of his opponents. His first match was against Tom R. (2.5) who is familiar with the tournament and knows how to play a 5.0. Tom took the first game but the Saim came back to win the last two. His next match against Anjo G. (5.0), who looked pretty hungry, put him in the running for the finals. Anjo bested Saim and Saim went to the loser's bracket where he went up against Jim C. (3.0). Jim doesn't play in the tourney often, but when he does, can turn on the heat. Luckily for Saim, Jim was thinking about beer and the end of the night and that made trouble for Jim in keeping up with Saim's ball pace.
Anjo G. (5.0) vs. Saim K. (5.0)
That means that Saim and Anjo were facing off again. Anjo, who was also thinking about the Marlow's Tavern Gift Card early on now had conflicted thoughts that troubled him. Anjo thought to himself, "If I win, I get to go to Marlow's Tavern with $54 and a $25 gift card! ....mmm beer.... But if I win, I will get moved up to a 5.5 and 5.5 is too hard..."

What Anjo didn't know was that because this was a small tourney, no one would get promoted. He also didn't know was that if this was a larger tourney, he would still get promoted at second place because of he has finished in the money 4 times in the past 12 weeks. Saim K. saw Anjo's troubled brow, felt no pitty for Anjo, took his money and the Marlow's gift card, and went home with victory. Anjo, having never won and now with his fourth 2nd place finish, solidifies his title "The Closer".

Welcome George B. (3.5). This was George's first tourney and was able to hold his own through several matches, got to play a solid 5.0 in a tournament, and play weaker and stronger players. He'll be back. Tom R. and Lawrence L., both 2.5's, made solid showings. Jim C. is making his first showing on the Winner's Circle by taking 3rd place.

Good times.... good times...
The full bracket
Below are some more highlights, video, and pics. Thanks again to everyone coming out to play!
